Bottle Opener

My partner and I wanted to produce a creative bottle opener, the one that is new in idea and easy to use at the same time. After many unsuccessful tryouts, we realized that we overestimated our ability to make such bottle opener when we had too limited resources.
* * * * *
For example, our first model was a bottle opener that had a clip that wraps around the neck of the bottle and attached to it was a seesaw looking hook that would function to push out the cap. However, only after coming up with the design did we realize that we had no means of connecting the different its many parts.

For our second model, we came up with a design that was much simpler than the first one. It was just one oval-shaped piece with an elongated hole in the middle. The hole would vary in size from right to left. The larger part of the hole was the gate in which the cap part of the bottle could come through and slide into the smaller part of the hole, so that only the cap would be above the oval-shaped piece. Giving a force from down to up on one end of the piece would pop up the bottle cap. We also made a model using the foam core. However, we were uncertain whether or not it would work because the Delrin was too thick to go stick below the cap. Also, we were unsure about its strength in that it might break in opening the bottle.

* * * * *
After our next few models, we came up with some general designs, the ones that can be easily found in stores.

* * * * *
Questioning about the actual strength of Delrin, we started to try opening a bottle with already cut Delrin pieces. We wanted to know if the material is strong enough to open a bottle. Fortunately, I was able to get a bottle open with a piece cut in the shape of an arrow.

We decided to develop a design based on the part of the arrow that I used to open the bottle. We sketched one with a handle on the top, but rejected the design because it was possible that the handle could break.

* * * * *
We then sketched one with the handle down on the side, but we did not like the way it looked. We started to think of a creative shape that this could be made into such as a gun, letter "W," hammer...etc. Then, I saw the fire extinguisher on the wall whose handle looked similar to our last bottle opener design. Because it was a fire extinguisher, I automatically thought of "fire," and because the two angled handle of the extinguisher looked like a mouth of a bird, I was reminded of a dinosaur.

We decided to make our bottle opener into a cute little standing dinosaur whose opened mouth would be used to open the bottle. This model was reasonably reliable because it was just a variation of the arrow that I used to open the bottle. We had the handle(hole) on the sketch but decided to get rid of it for its further strength.

Here is our final model in Solidworks and the one cut out from Delrin. The dimensions of it is just as we planned(18cm x 18cm). It worked on the first try.
